Cheeseburgers in Tripoli

Imagine a country totally free from debt. Imagine a country where the crime rate is amongst the lowest in the world. Imagine a country where education for all is of the highest possible standards. Imagine a country where men and women truly are treated equally and poverty is virtually non existent.

Up until only a few months ago what you are imagining is a country called Libya.

Ruled by the apparently tyrannical Colonel Gaddafi for some forty years Libya has enjoyed unparalleled levels of prosperity. A true revolutionary in every sense of the word Colonel Gaddafi ruled Libya in true revolutionary style. Abandoning ideas of capitalism and democracy Libya was instead governed by a Dictator, sometimes with an iron fist, who supported and willingly armed fellow revolutionaries across the world. Refusing to conform to Europe's blueprint of civilisation Gaddafi chose to do it his way and for many years the Libyan population enjoyed the benefits. Gaddafi's vision was for a greater Africa, and Europe, as far as Colonel Gaddafi was concerned, could look after themselves.

Of course such a man does not sit well with modern Western ideologies of democracy and capitalism. Many methods have been employed by the West to either control
or remove this thorn in their side. Media propaganda has in turn vilified the Colonel for his part in Lockerbie and, under British Prime Minister Gordon Brown's reign, then courted his affections in the hope of securing lucrative deals for oil. In the backgroundof all of this secret service agents planned and executed several unsuccessfulassassination attempts. Once could say no stone was left unturned in the quest to keep Gaddafi on a leash. Yet nothing so far had worked...

Cue the events of February 2011. Breaking news reports tell us of a Libyan uprising. Saif al-Islam appears on state television to voice fears that Libya would fragment and be replaced by 15 Islamic fundamentalist states should the uprising not be contained and be allowed to gather momentum. He continues by announcing that a Constitutional Convention will take place on 23rd February in an attempt to placate the rebels.

At this point we should pause and consider Saif al-Islam's statements a little more carefully. 15 Islamic fundamentalist states. Islamic fundamentalism. The very same enemy President Bush declared a War on Terror upon only ten years before and which is still raging in other parts of the Middle East. One would think, logically, that upon hearing such a thing America, and NATO, would be doing their utmost to aid Gaddafi in preventing this from happening.

Cue news reports of Gaddafi killing innocent protestors. The world gasps at the level of ruthlessness Gaddafi is prepared to employ to protect his vision of a better Africa.Over and over we are fed images of protestors being gunned down. Yet...

We are not told who these rebels are. We are not told where these rebels come from. We are not told how the uprising began or even what the rebels are rebelling against and why. We are not told how the rebels initially armed themselves. We are not told a great many
things. But we are told, over and over, that Colonel Gaddafi is killing innocent protestors and that we must stop him.

NATO declares a no fly zone and states it will not interfere in the outcome of the War. Gaddafi, even with his airforce grounded, nevertheless begins to gain ground in quelling the uprising. NATO then, in a bizarre and inexplicable u-turn, then decides to begin arming the rebels and eventually, with the aid of NATO, the rebels recover lost territory and Gaddafi is finally
overthrown.

You can almost hear Western leaders sigh with happiness.

Libya is now a free for all. Almost every European country is sniffing around for the spoils of the war. The black gold and the Libyan people's future is being siphoned off and sold faster than it can be harvested.

Yet the Libyan people rejoice.

Libya is in turmoil. There is no working Government and the Libyan people are now firmly under the control of NATO and Western Europe.

Yet the Libyan people rejoice.

Colonel Gaddafi's vision of a united, powerful, and wealthy state of Africa is shattered. His hopes of using Libya as a blueprint for prosperity for other African nations to follow is erased.

Yet the Libyan people rejoice.

How long will it take now for Libya to become completely westernised? How long before they follow the western economic model of perpetual debt? How long will it be for us to finally see cheeseburgers being sold in Tripoli?

Gaddafi was a tyrant of that there is no mistake. The tragedy here is that the Libyan people have replaced one tyrant with another far greater one.
