Yesterday it was revealed that Britain pays more on cigs and booze than almost any other European nation. Rates of duty are almost five times what they are in other countries. Ask the Government why we pay such high rates of duty and they'll tell you it's because they want people to give up smoking and to drink less. Well what would happen if tomorrow all the smokers and
drinkers in this country suddenly decided to take the Government's advice? There'd be a financial black hole the size of Wales.
The truth is that the Government rely on this income as part of their yearly revenue and without it the country wouldn't just be facing austerity measures; it would be facing bankruptcy, foreclosure, and quite possibly a return to the feudal system. The billions lost would be crippling.
Now as a smoker and a drinker quite frankly I'm getting sick and tired of being vilified at every opportunity. We shouldn't be banning smoking in public places. We should be encouraging people to binge drink at every chance they get.
What people need to understand is that I'm willfully putting my health on the line every day for these ungrateful do-gooders jogging through the park at 6am. It's my sacrifice that is making their world a better place to live in. Now while I don't expect thanks a little appreciation would go a long way. When you stop and really think about it I'm not a burden to the health system...
I'm a bloody saint.
