Would somebody please give Jamie Oliver a medal?

It's about time somebody had the balls to come out and say what needs to be said. The priorities of the poor are twisted and warped but it's more than just not being able to cook and some parents being more interested in the latest plot development in Eastenders and Corrie than the welfare of their child; people also seem to have forgotten how to shop. When you're on a tight budget you need to forget about the big fancy convenient supermarkets. Buy your meat from a decent butcher, your fruit and veg from the local market, and your cleaning products from Poundland. There shouldn't be any social stigma attached to saving money and a family of four can easily eat well on a budget of £10 per day. Home economics is something which not only should be compulsory in schools but also something that parents should be teaching their young by example.

A McDonald's happy meal costs roughly £4. That feeds one child. For the same money you can buy two tins of plum tomatoes, a packet of mince, an onion, a carrot and a packet of spaghetti and then feed the whole family. Forget the revolting Dolmio ready made pasta sauces and learn to make your own. You don't like pasta? Make a shepherd's pie. You don't like shepherd's pie? Make a stew. It really isn't rocket science.

The level of vehemence levelled towards Jamie Oliver when he makes these kind of comments is astonishing. You do realise that the guy is trying to help? He wants YOUR kids to be healthy. He wants YOUR kids to live a better life. Why don't people simply try and listen to what he's got to say?
