Baroness Thatcher : Lifting The Veil

Welcome to Britain. In Britain, we do not have the freedom to choose how we dress in this country. If you believe we do, I suggest you might like to try walking down The Mall wearing nothing but a knotted handkerchief and a smile. This level of public dress might be acceptable in certain parts of the South American rainforest and various nudist beaches and campsites in Britain, but is not within our culture to wear nothing but beads and a grass skirt to appear in court.

The hemline has gradually crept up since Victorian days. (This pleases me, as I have been informed that I have nice ankles and it would be a shame not to be able to share these with the world. However, I lament the loss of men wearing Top Hats everyday). British culture on dress for women and men evolved, slowly and without force.

Niqaab wearing “D” stands accused of intimidating a witness. So, she attends court and immediately intimidates the court because she refuses to remove her veil to give her evidence. British courts have rules. The rules change in accordance with which type of court or case. They should be adhered to. They should not be changed because someone does not choose to adhere to the culture of the country they live in.

It is not a requirement of Islam that women wear the burqa/niqab. It is a cultural requirement… a political requirement. Islam is the religion, Islamism is the political ideology.

As a Christian Country, Britain displays great tolerance to other faiths. Tolerance toward another faith doesn’t mean that we must accept a political ideology which hides behind a religion in order to pursue its ambitions.

Secular countries, such as France, Belgium and the Netherlands have already banned the burqa. In Secular Turkey, where the Government estimates 99% of the entire population are Muslim, the hijab is banned in universities; libraries, public and Government buildings.

In Pakistan, women are not allowed to wear veils in court. Let me write that again, so you may take it in.

In Pakistan, women are not allowed to wear veils in court.

We are all familiar with the mutaween, or Religious Police, persecuting and harassing women in Saudi Arabia, or the Taliban enforcing the burqa in Afghanistan, but here’s the latest example of the political use of veils under Islamist controlled Sudan.

As an aside, in the latest burqa/niqab debate, no one has seen fit to bring this story up, so I will.

Surely so called “enlightened western muslim women” who wear the niqab should address attitudes like this? Silence on this issue though. All I see is condemnation of people who condemn the people who are saying that they will rape a woman, or indeed, a child for not covering up!

I know quite a few men who take great offence that some Muslims think that a female should be covered up otherwise a male will rape her. Is their offence not considered in this debate?

I also have no time for the so called “western feminists” who are backing the woman’s right to choose to wear the burqa, all the while actively campaigning against women’s right to choose what to wear whilst modelling for Page 3, Zoo, Nuts etc. Due to their own hypocrisy, their opinions can be disregarded in this debate.

The burqa is just another bit of cultural and political baggage that has been imported with the failed policy of mass uncontrolled immigration. I frequently read people defending Islam when the subject of Female Genital Mutilation is brought up. They rightly observe that it is a cultural practice… a culture that should be actively pursued through the courts but isn’t because authorities are faced with the fear of being called “racist”, or closed cultural communities, eager to continue their cultural practice of removing clitorises because the woman shouldn’t enjoy sex. Heaven forbid. (Other “Cultural” imports are available. See Forced marriage, Child marriage and honour crime for further information).

So, let’s open the debate. Free from accusations of racism (not all muslims are of one particular race), free from accusations of “islamophobia” (the veil isn’t a requirement of the religion, unlike the 5 K’s of Sikhism).

It’s about women and foreign cultures and their places within British society.

I’ll start by quoting Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

“The veil deliberately marks women as private and restricted property, nonpersons. The veil sets women apart from men and apart from the world; it restrains them, confines them, grooms them for docility. A mind can be cramped just as a body may be, and a Muslim veil blinkers both your vision and your destiny. It is the mark of a kind of apartheid, not the domination of a race but of a sex.”

If you haven’t heard of Ayaan, Look her up. Then look up the film she made with Theo Van Gogh. It’s called “Submission”.

Tolerance Of Intolerance AH Ali

I completely agree with you. Especially when British Christians are told that they cannot wear a cross at work. I find the burqua intimidating. How are people supposed to integrate into this culture when they wear something that by its very nature hides them and actually marks them much more as being different? If race and culture are not important in terms of integration then why is the left (usually the white, middle class left who have no clue about multiculturalism), always harping on about it? It just serves to separate people even more into their own ethnic groups. This is England. If you want to come here and live here, you should be prepared to integrate fully into this , western culture. My parents did. I am someone who born in this country to two immigrant parents- my mother is Italian and my father was from Pakistan. So I think I have some idea of what I’m talking about…

I totally agree. Interesting program on BBC Sunday morning but had to switch off after 10 minutes of female apologists. Women in this society have suffered (suffragettes) to bring equality and freedom.
How can we now give this all away. Shame on the BBC and the ‘liberal’ pandering politicos. Did you see Millipeed squirm out of the question posed by Andrew Marr on AM as well. Dont blame him, all those muslim supporters to keep onside for the big day
