Last night the American Dream was realised for a plucky fighter who grew up living rough on the streets. Lamont Peterson was the underdog in a fight predicted to be a walkover for Khan. Well walkover it was but certainly not for the boy from Bolton. After 12 thrilling rounds in what has been billed as one of the best fights of the 21st Century Khan lost his belts on a split decision.
I watched the fight live last night and Khan really has nothing to complain about. Peterson was magnificent and showed what the heart of a true champion should be. After a dubious knockdown in the first round he picked himself up and then proceeded to chase Khan around the ring for the rest of the fight. Khan simply had no answer to the pressure being exerted by the American. Khan now has two defeats under his name and has never beaten anyone of real calibre. Last night the illusion of Amir Khan being a real contender was shattered.
I thought the comments made by Khan post match were disgraceful. Put simply he lost to a superior boxer and I'm not surprised Lamont is willing to give him the rematch. Lamont never really looked in trouble despite taking some of Khans best shots.
Where does Khan go from here? It's a tricky one. I'm not sure a rematch with Lamont is the answer. If he lsoes that then he's finished in America.
Talks of a super fight against the likes of Mayweather or Pacquiao? You khan not be serious! lol
