Letter: Let’s stand up to European Court

Once again, British justice, already the laughing stock of Europe, has been dealt another blow by the European Court of Human Rights, which, overturning a court decision here to extradite a disciple of the late Osama Bin Laden, has completely ignored the recommendations of our judiciary system.

Hatemonger, Abu Qatada, who spouts his hatred towards the country which has sheltered him since his arrival here might (unlikely) face torture in Jordan. Despite a joint agreement signed by the British and Jordanian authorities to the contrary, Strasbourg says we are unable to offload him.

Now freed on bail, he remains just as big a threat to UK security and a continued drain on police security resources.

When is this country going to stand up to Europe and do what the French, Italian and other countries do? Why do we accept such inept decisions from Eurpe, when others interpret them differently and act accordingly? Why is our “Human Rights Watch” so naive and effete in its acquiescence to Brussels?

As the commentator Douglas Murray said on Newsnight recently “extradite him as other countries would and accept Europe’s slap on the wrist”.

How much longer are we going to put up with these ludicrous decisions from Brussels and Strasbourg? Whatever happened to David Cameron’s pledge last year to introduce a British Bill of Rights? Merely empty, electoral rhetoric.
